Hundreds of Optimized Applications
Announced for Power Macintosh
More Than 150 Leading Software Vendors Worldwide Announce New
Products Optimized for New RISC-based Macintosh Family; More Than 50
Applications To Ship Within 30 Days
NEW YORK, New York--March 14, 1994--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced that more than 150 leading software developers worldwide
have announced new versions of their products for the new RISC-based,
Apple Power Macintosh computers introduced by today. These
applications, often called "native" applications, have been written
specifically to take advantage of the PowerPC processor found in
Power Macintosh computers, offering customers up to four times the
performance of the same applications running on today's fastest
68040- and 80486-based systems and as high as tenfold increases for
applications that use floating-point, mathematical calculations.
Companies representing every leading application category--including
general business and productivity, publishing, education, multimedia,
technical markets, and entertainment--made announcements detailing
their plans for new products that take specific advantage of the RISC
technology in Power Macintosh systems. Among these developers are
key market-leaders such as Microsoft Corp., WordPerfect Corp., Claris
Corp., Aldus Corp., Adobe Systems, Inc., ACIUS Inc., Lotus
Development Corp., Quark, Inc., and Macromedia (Editor's Note: Please
contact Apple for the complete Power Macintosh Third-Party Developer
Listing).
"The opportunity has never been greater for software developers than
with Power Macintosh--the only RISC-based platform shipping with a
mainstream operating system," said David Nagel, senior vice president
of the AppleSoft division. "Our third-party partners, representing a
veritable 'who's who' of the industry, can now reach millions of personal
computer users with dramatic performance improvements and groundbreaking new
features previously possible only in expensive, high-end systems."
"The Power Macintosh platform will greatly benefit our mutual
customers by bringing a whole new level of performance to Macintosh
users. We're using this power to make Microsoft Excel, Word and
PowerPoint work together more seamlessly so they are easier to use,"
said Pete Higgins, senior vice president of Desktop Applications at
Microsoft Corporation. "Microsoft will deliver native Power
Macintosh versions of Microsoft Office including Microsoft Excel,
Word, and PowerPoint, as well as Works, and FoxPro, this summer."
Mirroring Apple's worldwide introduction of Power Macintosh
computers, developers making announcements today span more than a
dozen countries including the U.S., Japan, France, England, Canada,
Germany, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Italy, Australia, Saudi Arabia and
Egypt. Because of the strong support from developers worldwide,
Power Macintosh customers can expect a wide range of native Power
Macintosh software localized for their particular country, wherever
they may reside.
Of the Power Macintosh third-party products that have been announced
worldwide, more than fifty are expected to begin shipping within 30
days, with hundreds more following throughout the next six months.
Leading products expected to ship within 30 days of introduction
include: Adobe Photoshop, Aldus PageMaker, Aldus FreeHand,
QuarkXPress, WordPerfect 3.0, Lotus cc:Mail, ClarisWorks,
ClarisImpact, Wolfram Mathematica, Fractal Design Painter, FrameMaker
4, Virtus VR, and VideoFusion.
Power Macintosh customers will enjoy a wide selection of software for
their new systems. In addition to being able to choose from hundreds
of applications accelerated for the new RISC-based systems, Power
Macintosh customers can choose from the more than 5,000 currently-
shipping Macintosh applications that will run unaltered on Power Macintosh
systems. Customers can also run MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications on
their Power Macintosh systems via SoftWindows , a PC-compatibility program from
Insignia Solutions, Inc., which is preinstalled on selected Power Macintosh
configurations. This powerful combination means Power Macintosh computers can
run more applications than any other computing platform in the world.
Power Macintosh is the next-generation of Macintosh personal
computers based on PowerPC, a new RISC-based microprocessor family
under development by Apple, IBM and Motorola. Power Macintosh
computers bring a new level of performance and functionality to
personal computing at low prices. Apple plans to offer a full line
of Power Macintosh products from entry-level to high-end systems and
many upgrade paths for 680x0-based Macintosh customers.
Headquartered in Cupertino, CA, Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL)
develops, manufactures and markets personal computer, server, and
personal interactive electronic systems for use in business,
education, the home, science, engineering and government. A
recognized pioneer and innovator in the information industry, Apple
